A Tail of Two Kitties…..

As many know, last October we adopted two kittens from the Humane Society, about 2 weeks after the tragic passing of our almost 8 year old family cat, Jasmine.

Pierre was just 2 months old, weighing in at 2.35 lbs. He was a tiny lil guy, with that light fuzz of black & white fur, and a unique shaped head & big huge green eyes! His “trademark”, as his foster Mom’s called it, was his screechy meow. And boy were they right! Shortly after adopting him, we set out for a more suitable name—the gamut was mixed….Jack, Tyler and Clyde were top runners…but ultimately, Mike picked his name …. Buster.

Our lil clumsy pip-squeek boy! Buster’s never been the graceful one! He is very playful, and quick! Forget about stalking…. if he sees something, there is no hesitation, he leaps and jumps right at it…..many times before thinking about the consequences! One thing Buster has always loved….FOOD!

And it shows! At only 8 months old…Buster, our once 2 lb lil fuzz ball….is now 10 lbs, 3 oz!!! If you thought he was clumsy before….just watch him and his 10 lb giant baby body! Hah! He has outgrown his squeaky meow, and now adorns a “big boy” loud meow—which he likes to practice using a lot lately. He is such a love bug and sooo passive, which works out excellent in our house with an active 3 year old! She lugs him around, bear hugs him, and he loves it. We often find him sleeping with her at night and hangs out with her during the day. Our big lush of a cat! While Buster loves a good petting….it has to be on his term. He enjoys being held & pet much better than being pet on your lap. He is the first cat I have ever owned that actually enjoys being picked up!

His favorite toys are chasing the laser pointer, a ball of paper, and chasing string. He is often bored though, loses interest quick in most cat toys. We are still on the look out for something that he may “take-to” more…..

Our GIANT 8 month old “baby boy”.

Next, meet Belle, a/k/a “Belly”. We adopted Belle, whom was named Francois by the Humane Society Staff….was renamed as Belle by Paige….our resident Princess lover. Belle is not Buster’s biological sister…but they don't know that! When we brought her home, she weighed about 2.75 lbs, and was almost twice the size of Buster. Belle is 100% black cat, with big yellow eyes. When i say 100%, i mean it. She has all black pads on her feet and black whiskers too!

They have been raised together since very very young and lived together with their Foster Mommies as well as their biological siblings. Belle is approximately 2 weeks older than Buster, born in July of 08. When we initially picked her out…it was by chance. We had our hearts set on Pierre….but wanted him to have a sibling….preferably a girl. So the Humane Society staff basically shook up the cart of kittens…and out popped Francois. Initially, she was VERY shy and skittish. In the trial room at the shelter, she spent the entire time hiding under the couch. When we tried to grab her, the lil brat would scratch us! We were initially hesitant is this was the cat for us….but then decided we should give her a try……and am so glad we did!

It took Belle about a day or 2 in our home to come out of her shell…and we were delighted to quickly learn how much of a loving rambunctious kitten she really is! Its like night/day! She is very vocal & talkative….the hunter/stalker….yet very loving and motherly. Loves a good cuddle….loves being under the blankets and up close by your face! Unlike Buster, Belle does not appreciate being picked up and does LOVE petting, 24/7….preferably nonstop by 100 hands all at once.

She has a dainty girl-like meow and is very feminine. She is a stalker and a thinker. She checks out and stalks everything before ever considering pouncing, unlike her brother.

She loves loves loves her little toy mice. No, seriously. Obsessed. Plays with them for HOURS at a time, all by herself! Hey, whatever floats your boat, right? She gets depressed when she loses them under the stove or fridge. I have to be sure to have a bunch on-hand at all times! Buster doesn't get what the big deal is with the mice…. he sniffs them them walks away.

Belle is now almost 9 months old…and is slim, sleek and muscular build. She weighs ALMOST 7 lbs….her “little” brother whom she once outweighed and outsized, now outweighs her by 3 lbs and several inches of girth! LOL!

Buster & Belle are best of buddies. They play, fight, and sleep together. They fight over toys, and try and steal each other’s snacks….it really is like having boy/girl twins in the house sometimes! Whenever i buy cat items, I always have to get a pink one AND a blue one, hehe.

And that’s the “tail” so far on our other children! I talk so much about my human kind…i figured i’d shed some limelight on our furry children as well! :-)

I’ll have to do a special post on my oldest “child” Eddie….my almost 13 year old Green Iguana, whom Ive had since he was just 8 weeks old!

…and by the way….I live in a house full of Leo children, big, small, furry and scaled!

Awww, love the post about your kitties! I do think you need to do one on the iguana.

Since you told the weight of your kitties I decided to weigh my oldest on our scale. I am VERY embarrassed to say he weighs 17.6 lbs! We buy him weight control food but he insists on eating the kitten food and then Cullie eats the weight control. Rammie will get on Cullie and poor Cullie can move!

Lovely story, Vicki. You write very well! Like I said about Eduardo, Belle and Buster are very lucky to have been adopted by your family!
