So Im having one of those days today wherest I suppose every parent feels this way at some point in time--- what am I doing wrong? Why cant I get through to this little creature? WHAT DID I DO WRONG?!
She snuck food AGAIN. This time...around 8am I heard her open and close her bedroom door 100x...seriously...over and over again. I listened to it for like 5 minutes.....figuring she was playing some sort of game. Finally, it grated my last nerve and I got my lazy ass out of bed. She opens the door again whilst Im coming down the hall, has a look of terror on her face and quickly slams it in my face! WTF? So i push the door open (with her behind it resisting me)...and ask "what are you doing?"...Thats when I see it. Her hands, and face covered in OREO crumbs.... teeth a blackened mess. ARG!!!!! Once again, she snuck into the kitchen....this time got her stool and broke into the cookie jar. She says she ate 3-4 cookies.
Right now we now have a lock on our fridge, and all chips/pretzels are on-top of the fridge. Last week I found evidence that she had been sneaking into the cereal cabinet-- she left all the boxes wide open. The cookie jar is set pretty far back on the counter-- we didnt think she could get at it even with the stool. If you've been reading over the past few weeks...you'll know shes stolen everything from donuts to cookies to chips, yogurt and even raw cookie dough.
So what now? Do i get a fuckin' safe and lock all food in it?!
What saddens me, is that we give her treats all the time. Yesterday when we were out shopping, i got a coffee and got her a donut from Dunkin Donuts--- last night after our steak dinner....all 3 of us had ice cream...she had it in a cone as we sat out on the porch! The night before we had some peanut butter chocolate chip cookies while we watched the end of Bolt before bedtime. So, it is certainly NOT taboo in our house--- she gets her fair share of sweets. Why does she have to steal more?!
We took away pool-time and her ponies-- plus she had a time-out this morning. She doesnt have any remorse about it tho--- cause heck, she got to eat cookies for breakfast-- so technically, she won!
We will no longer allow her to play "quietly" in her room alone or have access to the house without our direct supervision, either. Apparently we've been giving her too much freedom and assuming too much from her. I am about to get out the baby gates again too... :-P
*Sigh*

Vicki this really is so odd. I would talk to your ped about it. I wonder if it is some sort of compulsive behavior. It could be something so simple. Maybe your ped may have some advice or something. Or is she going through a growth spurt and needs to eat at odd times? Maybe you could get a container or a spot in the fridge and tell her "x" is what she can eat without asking. And you replenish each day?
Erin, I agree---it is odd and compulsive...and what gets me the most is the fact that she has 0 remorse over it....and keeps doing it. Goes right along with her nail biting...she bites her nails til they are red sore nubs! (toe nails included....yuck) I am 1 step away from duct-taping gloves & socks on her hands/feet permanently!
She HAD access to what was just her snacks-- but she blew that by lying and sneaking everything else in the fridge (and we being naive thought she was being sweet & honest and only eating her stuff-- WRONG). She'd eat like 24/7 if we let her-- apparently sweets if she had the choice.
She has her annual appt the 1st week in August....Ill be certain to mention it.
